GROUP A
Germany: Host nations who hope that the World Cup can kick-start a struggling football team and the nation's economy. Key players are Oliver Kahn, Michael Ballack and Kevin Kuryani. The hosts should move out of this group and into the knockout stage.
Costa Rica: The Ticos squeaked into qualifying in third place and rarely impressed. They have an aging team and rely heavily on Walter Ceteno and Paolo Wanchope. They won't go far.
Poland: The other team that you would figure to progress, the Poles and Ecuador actually met this year on November 13. The Poles stifled them, 3-0. Top players include idled Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek, Nigerian-born Emmanuel Olisadebe and Tomas Klos. They''ll go through.
Ecuador: Augustin Delgado, Edwin Tenorio and Ulises de la Cruz head up weak South American team with few talents to remark on. Despite finishing third in CONMEBOL,they can book a ticket home now.

GROUP B
England: Has to be considered a favorite. Talent all over the pitch from the dynamic Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney to the superstar David Beckham. A sweet draw makes their path quite easy if they can contain their sometimes volatile personalities.
Paraguay: A team thoroughly past its sell-by date. Julio Dos Santos remains their talisman.
Trinidad and Tobago: Aging Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker seemed to have bled all the flair out of this CONCACAF side, but somehow got this collection of eccentrics that feature Shaka Hislop, Dwight Yorke and Stern John in by the skin of their teeth with a last-day victory over Bahrain.
Sweden: Henrik Larsson. Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Freddie Ljungberg. Next round.

GROUP C
Argentina: A challenger for the title. The second placed-finishers in CONMEBOL have young lions in Lionel Messi and established, world- class talent in Carlos Tevez, Hernan Crespo and Roberto Ayala. A deep lineup makes them dangerous.
Ivory Coast: Strong African challenger motivated by dynamo Didier Drogba. Can hang with any team, in the World Cup, and have a chance to go deep.
Serbia and Montenegro: Mateja Kezman led Serbia to the top of group seven in qualifying, good enough to edge Spain into the playoffs. They aren't fancy, but are aggressive and dangerous.
Holland: Perhaps the other team — along with the USA — that deserved a seed? Deep talent all over the field from Ruud van Nistelrooy to Edwin van der Saar. Could contest the finals.

GROUP D
México: Finished behind the USA in CONCACAF qualifying but were seeded above the USA in the draw. Jared Borgetti has been ineffective since his move to Bolton but is deadly with the national team. Will the fiery Cuahtemoc Blano return?
Iran: Ali Daei is all you need to know — they depend on him to score. Improving but they play such weak opposition in the Middle East that true development eludes them.
Angola: Talented but inexperienced, Angola's hero Akwa leads a squads of unknowns wiith talent. Benfica forward Mantorras; Figueirido, Joao Pereira and Ze Kalanga are players to watch. It'll be tough to get past Portugal, however.
Portugal: Coach Luis Felipe Scolari has a team with talent but deep insecurity about their own talents. Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo lead a squad that has disappointed on every stage, most memorably in the Euro 2004 finals. But the talent is inarguable: Deco, Pauleta and Ricardo Carvalho are but a few of their big names.

GROUP E
Italy: Three-time champs, the Azzuri enter the World Cup as one of the teams to beat. Marcelo Lippi's squad is deep, experienced and talented. Youngsters such as Daniel de Rossi, Luca Toni, Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta play next to legends Alessandro Nesta, Francesco Totti, Fabio Cannavaro, and Gianluigi Buffon. A devastating side.
Ghana: Producers of some of Africa's greatest players, Ghana makes an overdue debut in 2006 led by the impressive Michael Essien. If there is a weak team in this group, perhaps this is it, but the Black Stars are a handful.
USA: Led by DaMarcus Beasley, Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson and Kasey Keller, the USA look to repeat their quarterfinals performance in Korea. The job got a whole lot tougher with this draw. The USA has never played well in Europe; the team is also a political lightning rod due to world opposition to the Bush Administration's actions. Could be the longest three matches in American soccer history.
Czech Republic: A fabulous side anchored by the best netminder in the game, Peter Cech, the Czech's weak spot is their somewhat erratic attack, spearheaded by Milan Baros. Make no mistake, this is a tough side with tactical acumen. First time in the World Cup since the fall of the Soviet Czechoslovakia.

GROUP F
Brazil: Do Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Cafu, Roque Junior et al. get tired of beating up on sops like Japan? Well, we won't get to find out this year. The defending champs are the team to beat, and are also individually, the best team player for player in the tourney. They can start six forwards. They just might do it. It is a pity they can not marshall that footballing genius to their country's economy.
Croatia: Tough but dull side led by Nino Kranjcar and anchored at the back by Srna and Marko Babic. This isn't 1998, however, and Davor Suker isn't playing.
Australia: My pick to get out of the group stages. Guus Hiddink has a motley crew that includes Tim Cahill and Mark Viduka, but the Socceroos also have heart. Plus, they're wearing the same exact shirt Brazil is. So, why not?
Japan: Zico has a big task on his hands with a Japanese team that has regressed since 2002. Like the USA, Japan remains frustrating in front of the net and tactically undernourished. Despite known quantities like Hidetoshi Nakata, Shunsuke Nakamura and Shinji Ono this was the best team in a rotten region, and that won't be good enough for Germany.

GROUP G
France: Six months ago, Raymond Domenech's team was coming off the rails. But look what Zinidene Zidane can do for you — since the midfield master returned, France is winning and look set to recapture past glory. Thierry Henry remains the planet's best striker. The team to beat in this group.
Switzerland: Switzerland are a better side than they're given credit for being, but they remain on the outside of Europe's elites. Arsenal star Philipe Senderos is arguably the team's best player; problem is that he's a defender. Still, the Swiss were undefeated in the qualifying campaign, and edged Israel for a slot. They'll progress.
Korea Republic: What happens when you take a team that over-achieved last World Cup and pile immense pressure on the players and coaches? You get this sad side, which despite some lively Asian fantasias I've read, stinks. They shouldn't bother to unpack.
Togo: With two imports from Nigeria, unlikely Togo has finally got that once-in-a-lifetime chance. Led by stars Emmanuel Adebayor and Oulfade Adekanmi, Togo can score, but are hurt on defense. Still, they're better than Korea.
STYLEgod
05-08-2006, 12:57 PM
GROUP H
Spain: Chronic under-acheivers, Spain needs to make this Cup count. Led by the aging Raul and backstopped by Iker Casillas — Real Madrid's most consistent performer — Spain has all the talent it needs to take a shot at the title. The only ones who can beat them are themselves, which they have a habit of doing.
Ukraine: Striker Andriy Shevchenko is the team's lone world-class player. That may be enough for a team eager to avenge their missing out on Euro 2004.
Tunisia: A fading African power, the Eagles have high expectations that are going to be trouble filling. Haykel Guemamdia and Adel Chadli lead a decent if unspectacular side.
Saudi Arabia: Vet Sami Al Jaber and expensive youngster Yasser Al Qahtan lead a side that few outside of the Middle East have ever seen. They aren't missing much; despite the Kingdom's money and development attempts, they lag far behind the rest of the world.

Oliver Kahn, 36, will be playing for 2 more years from the club team Bayern Munich after the World Cup because of what he says about phase of life. He was phenomenal back then but he will be a starter for the WC after being stunned earlier this month when Jens Lehmann (England clubteam Arsenal) was named as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper for the FIFA World Cup. Kahn did say that if he is needed at the WC, then he will be there according to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

first of all lets see here...ECUADOR IS NOT HERE FOR ITS FIRST TIME AND I DONT THINK IT WILL BE THE LAST...the first time is always a learning experience...the second time is all about going out and pop'n your collar and showing what south american futbol is all about...we (ECUADOR) are no longer look as " just another game " kind of team...we have now earned all the respect from not only the local countries but also the entire world...so for you to say that we ( ECUADOR ) "should pack our bags" is really not all that for me to start an argument...because all of us who think we know all about "futbol" didnt ever think that in 2002 WC...France not only would be eliminated without a win but not even score a single goal....so for all those who are knocking on ECUADOR stay your ass in the kitchen...
